The Bais Yosef pondered on the prevalent Minhag of S'fardim during his lifetime to wash before Kiddush being made on wine. Since according to all the Rishonim that we have previously quoted that learnt the Gemara about washing before Kiddush as referring to making Kiddush on bread, there is no Mekor to allow washing before Kiddush on wine.

Tosfos in the name of R' Tam say that the Rav's Shaila whether one can wash before Kiddush is dependant on his general Shita that it is not necessary to make Kiddush in the place that the Seuda is eatenIn such a case there would be a concern that someone might leave after Kiddush and then there would be a real Hefsik between washing and Hamotzie.

WASHING BEFORE KIDDUSH

SEIF 12

The Gemara says in the name of R' Bruna in the name of Rav that someone who erred and washed his hands before Kiddush can no longer make Kiddush (on either wine or bread). The Gemara disproves this partially, as Rav himself, when he was in the mood for bread, made Kiddush over bread. The Rif explains that we see from here that one can make Kiddush over whatever he desires more, wine or bread.
