WHOLE LOAVES

SEIF 1 (Cont.)
The double loaves of Lechem Mishna must be whole. The Gra brings the source from the Gemara in Brachos. If someone has a piece of wheat bread and a whole loaf of barley bread, he wraps the piece of wheat bread in the barley bread and makes the Bracha on both loaves together. However, on Shabbos it is necessary to make the Bracha on two loaves. The implication being that in the first case mentioned above, the person is only making the Bracha on one whole loaf together with another partial loaf, but on Shabbos both loaves must be whole.

There are those who say that this implies that Kiddush must be said by the light of the Shabbos candles. The Rosh says this is not a proof. Maybe the reason why Rabba was concerned was because they would not feel comfortable eating in the dark. However, if they did want to make Kiddush and eat in the dark, it would be permitted.
