EATING BEFORE KIDDUSH

SEIF 4

It is forbidden to eat before Kiddush. This comes from a Machlokes in the Gemara which asks that if someone eats before Kiddush, is he still allowed to make Kiddush or is he now prohibited from performing it. From here it appears that both sides agree that eating is forbidden, the Machlokos revolves around whether one who transgresses this prohibition is still allowed to say Kiddush or not. There is another Gemara which seems to imply that "Shabbos establishes itself" with a prohibition to eat before Kiddush.

IF ONE CAN'T AFFORD THE MORNING MEAL AND KIDDUSH

SEIF 3 (Cont.)

If someone has a cup of wine for the night Kiddush, but cannot afford both a morning meal and wine for the day Kiddush, the Magen Avraham says he should purchase the meal. The Ran explains that the purpose of the morning Kiddush is because the honor of the day is greater than the honor of the night. This is because a person is unable to differentiate a specific voice in its entirety while there is someone else simultaneously speaking the same words. Since he cannot hear it clearly from the person he is listening to, he is not Yoitze. This is not similar to Megila where ten people are reading at the same time, however it is still possible to be Yoitze. In that case, the Nes of Purim is considered very special to people, so therefore the people will listen more carefully and will be able to pick up a single voice.
