THE NAFKA MINA WHY THE BREAD IS COVERED

The Magen Avraham writes there is a Nafka Minah for the various reasons given for covering the bread before Kiddush. The Nafka Minah comes in determining when to uncover the bread. That the bread should not be "embarrassed" because the Bracha on the wine is made first, it would seem permissible to uncover the bread following the Bracha made over the wine, though Kiddush was not yet finished. But as for the reason that the bread comes for the honor of Shabbos, it should only be uncovered (as to present it) after Kiddush is finished.

The Gemara says that one should not bring the table to the place where the meal is to be eaten until after Kiddush. Even though there is another Gemara which says the table must be set before Shabbos (which would connote that the table was there before Shabbos) we must say that it was set up someplace else and then brought to the place where the meal is to be eaten after Kiddush. If it was brought before Kiddush, then the bread is covered and Kiddush is made. Tosfos points out that this Halacha applied only to the days of the Gemara where the tables were small and movable. Our tables which are too large to move, L'Chatchila are set it in the place where the meal is eaten, and the bread covered before saying Kiddush.

IF SOMEONE TASTED FOOD BEFORE KIDDUSH

If someone forgot and tasted food before Kiddush, he may say Kiddush as soon as he realizes his mistake. The Magen Avraham and the Taz say he makes Kiddush that night and doesn't need to wait until the next day to make it again. The Rashbam here who says a person can only make Kiddush by day is referring to the Shita that states one may not say Kiddush after eating.

This differs from the Shita that we Paskim like, i.e. that Kiddush is said at night.
