WASHING A SHOE
SEIF 9
It is permitted to pour water over a stain on a shoe until it washes away, but a person may not launder it. Rashi explains laundering the shoe consists of rubbing the sides together the way the launders would do it. The Biur Halacha explains that rubbing the sides against each other cannot only be what is meant here. Rather, since it is prohibited to launder hardened leather, and because it is too hard to bend, we must be referring to rubbing it with something else; for example, one's hands. Thus, we must conclude that rubbing hard with water against the stain is considered laundering.
