Though soaking leather is allowed, one may not soak garments because soaking garments is an integral part of their laundering. The Rishonim ask: How do we allow a person to walk through a river on Shabbos in order to go learn with his Rebbi, since it will soak his clothing and result in his being Chayiv for laundering?

SQUEEZING WATER FROM LEATHER

SEIF 9 (Cont.)
The Biur Halacha writes that the Rambam holds that although one is Chayiv for laundering leather, a person would be Pattur for squeezing water out of what was absorbed by the leather. The Biur Halacha asks; since a person who squeezes water from a garment is Chayiv because it is considered part of the act of laundering, if he is Chayiv for laundering leather, shouldn't he be Chayiv for squeezing it, too? From where does the Rambam learn to differentiate between these two cases?

WASHING A SHOE

SEIF 9
It is permitted to pour water over a stain on a shoe until it washes away, but a person may not launder it. Rashi explains laundering the shoe consists of rubbing the sides together the way the launders would do it. The Biur Halacha explains that rubbing the sides against each other cannot only be what is meant here. Rather, since it is prohibited to launder hardened leather, and because it is too hard to bend, we must be referring to rubbing it with something else; for example, one's hands. Thus, we must conclude that rubbing hard with water against the stain is considered laundering.
