PRESSING CLOTHES- PART THREE

SEIF 4 (Cont.)
The Gra says that the Tur who holds that R' Yehuda is not arguing with the Tanna Kamma (according to the Bais Yosef's explanation) and holds like Rashi that when removing clothes by loosening a tight press, it is considered demolishing. However, if the press is already loose, everyone holds it is permitted to remove the clothes because it is not similar to demolishing. Using this reasoning, we are not forced to use the answer supplied by the Magid Mishna which interprets that the Tanna Kamma is making a Gezaira that if someone loosens the press which is already partially loosened, he would come to loosen it when it is tight.

PRESSING CLOTHES - PART TWO

SEIF 4 (Cont.)
The Magid Mishna questions Rashi's explanation that loosening a press is similar to dismantling it, according to the assumption of the Rambam who says the Tanna Kamma argues with R' Yehuda. Why then does the Tanna Kamma prohibit removing the clothes when the press is partially loose? It appears that one is demolishing the press only when it is extra tight? He answers that it is prohibited because of a Gezaira; that if a person loosens it when the press is already loose, he might come to loosen it when the press is tight.

PRESSING CLOTHES

SEIF 4
The Mishna (Shabbos 141a) states that one is allowed to loosen a layman's press, (Rashi explains) in order to remove clothes from there to wear them on Shabbos. But one may not press clothes, (as Rashi explains) because those clothes will only be used during the week. However, if it is a professional press, then a person may not touch it at all, (as Rashi explains) since it is so tightly closed, loosening it would be akin to dismantling the press. R' Yehudah says that if it was partially loosened before Shabbos, then it may be loosened some more until the clothes can be slipped out of it.
