The Magen Avraham quotes the Bach who forbids marking a Sefer with a fingernail, because such a notch, if it would last a long time, would cause a person to be Chayiv. Therefore, one might assume that even though it is known that the mark will not last, it should at least be considered an Issur D'Rabanan The Elya Rabba quotes the Levush who says that even if the mark would be long lasting, the person would still be Pattur from a Chatos, since he is not writing a letter. This argument hinges on a Machlokes in the Mishna. The Rabanan say that one is not Chayiv for marking in such a fashion, only for actual writing. R' Yose holds that one is Chayiv for marking, even if the marks do not form letters.

MARKING A SEFER WITH YOUR FINGERNAIL

The Tur permits using one's fingernail to mark the place in a Sefer, since that mark is not permanent and does not last. The Magen Avraham points out that we are only referring to unformed marks, but not marks that resemble letters, since it is forbidden to write letters even if they do not last, (refer to Seif 4). The Darkai Moshe quotes the Ohr Zarua who forbids making any type of mark.

MAKING LETTERS IN THE AIR

SEIF 4 (Cont.)
The Ohr Zarua says that one is allowed to form letters in the air, since no mark is left. The Magen Avraham deduces that even though someone could be training themselves to write, one is still allowed to do it on Shabbos.
