CLOSING YOUR SLEEVE WITH A THREAD

SEIF 7
Before buttons were put on sleeves to close them, sleeves were closed by pulling a thread that was sewed into the edge of the sleeve; similar to a drawstring. Rabeinu Peretz prohibits to close such a sleeve on Shabbos, since it is considered part of the Malacha of sewing. Though planning to untie and loosen it at the end of the day, still, sewing for a day is still considered sewing.

PULLING STITCHES CLOSED

SEIF 6 (Cont.)
The Gemara says that anyone pulling a (sewing) thread is Chayiv. Rashi explains that the stitching was coming apart and pulling on the thread will cause the stitches to go back in place, thus attaching the two sides of cloth together.
