RIPPING

SEIF 14 (Cont.)
The Tosfos Shabbos says that if a person rips a tightly sewn seam, they are Chayiv for ripping. This is the same way such a ripping to a garment could be Yoitze Kriah. However, if the material was not sewn tightly, rather the threads spaced to look like the rungs of a ladder, ripping such a garment might not constitute the Malacha of ripping, just like an Aval would not be Yoitze Kriah.

GLUING

SEIF 14
The Rambam writes that gluing together papers or leather is a Tolda of sewing. The Biur Halacha explains that sewing includes attaching any two articles together. From the Gemara Shabbos 74b we learn that this would even applies to wood. The Gemara states that if someone makes a rim on a reed basket (which combines all the individual reeds together), it is considered the Malacha of sewing.

RIPPING

SEIF 13
The Rambam writes that someone cannot break a piece of pottery or rip a piece of paper on Shabbos for the purpose of putting objects on top of them because this would be the Malacha of creating a utensil. The Biur Halacha asks whether one should also be Chayiv for ripping the paper? The answer cannot be because a person is only Chayiv for ripping a woven piece of cloth, but would not be Chayiv for material made from non woven materials (like paper), since we know a person is Chayiv for ripping leather.
